My Kids
My oldest son is 19 and a freshman at one of the local colleges. He played basketball from the first grade on at the same school. He is an amazing basketball player. He graduated this past year and made us so proud. The last game he really played in was February 21, 2009. It was senior night, which is a big deal at our school. It was even as bigger deal last year because he was the only senior on the team. It started out as an awesome night and then tragedy struck. He went down the court on a fast break and a boy from the other team fouled him right under the basket. My son went down and he went down hard. I have never seen him in so much pain. My husband was recording the whole thing. I felt helpless as he was writhing in pain. This happened towards the end of the first quarter. He tried coming back in, but collapsed at half time. His coach, the best we've had, let him go out one final time and he received a standing ovation. My heart was broken, but swelled with pride. The diagnosis was a torn ACL and surgery was required. He wanted to wait until afetr prom, so I relented. He tried playing in the sectional game, but popped his knee and was out almost immediately. The game was televised and he wanted that opportunity. He has been on the mend and is doing well. He can still play with friends, but nothing to hardcore.
Next, I have a son who will turn 9 next month. He is a character. He is in the 3rd grade and has some trouble, but I think he will ultimately be ok. He was in Cub Scouts, but our local pack is a nightmare. My hubby was going to take over as cubmaster, but after numerous things he couldn't do it. The biggest was the current cubmaster determining my MS "wasn't that bad", so we took him out. He got an electric guitar from Santa and we were hoping for his interest to increase, we were wrong. He also got new WII games, so that could be why. He is a funny feller though. The other day one of the boys had been chewing on the WII controller and noone would fess up. When I said I was going to match up their teeth impressions the 9 y/o looked at me and said, "Look at me, I've got nothin'", which is true because he has a lot of missing teeth. What can you do but smile at him.
Then I have another son who is 6. Boy oh boy, are my hands full. This kid is the total package. He started kindergarten this year and he is thriving. He is so smart, it's scary. He's not only smart, but has tons of common sense. One day a girl is going to be very lucky. He has dimples that make your heart melt and he is as loving as the day is long. He is named after my hubby's grandpa and my grandpa. He is going to make them proud. He keeps us on our toes everyday. The things he says make you wonder who is going to win.
I also have a 17 year old daughter who lives with her father. She lived with her dad until she was about 6 and then she lived with us for three years. No matter how much I love her, things were rough. I tried calling her on Christmas and New Year's, but once again the number is disconnected. This has been an ongoing thing for many years, but I can't change things. She is a very smart young lady, but doesn't apply herself. She knows I love her and I'm here if she needs me.
Finally, I have a 25 year old stepson who lives in the next town. We don't really have a relationship because of choices he has made in his life. I hope that changes.
I have a husband who is retired at 46 years old and is underfoot 24/7. We have been together for 15 years and he is my soulmate. You know when you can picture the tow of you old together, you were meant to be. I doubt if that's true, but it sounded good. Anyway, he really is the love of my life and always will be. Love you more sweetheart!
No matter how many articles you read, nothing prepares you for real parenting like remembering your childhood.
Nothing made me so sure of this as one morning a few years ago when my 5 year old woke me up. He told me that his 3 year old brother had made a mess, Nice wake up so far. I proceed to go into their bedroom and look at my 3 year old who is brown from head to toe. He had made a mess in his diaper and decided to put his hands down the back of his diaper. He did this several times and also decided to make a little painting on his bedroom wall, a virtual poopcaso, as my husband called it. So read some articles, it may give you some ideas, but it will never prepare you for poop art on the walls.
